In bloom
The remaining Bells of Ireland are too short or too twisted to harvest, so letting them go to seed. We’re still harvesting gladiolus when we can beat the grasshoppers, lemon bee balm, yarrow, bachelor buttons, black & blue salvia, daisies, purple coneflowers, privet flowers, statice, roses, carnations, liatris, pink hydrangea and rudbeckia. The lisianthus are really going to town this week and the delphinium have decided to have a second showing (which was a pleasant surprise).
Available Starters / Seeds
Seeds: Chamomile (NEW!), bluebonnets (manually scarified), bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, lime basil, blue spice basil, Persian basil, Thai basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, tassel flower, and marigold.
Starters: Black & Blue Salvia, tarragon, oregano, catnip, marjoram, curly parsley, orange thyme, spearmint, rosemary, lavender, Genovese basil, sweet basil, lime basil, coleus, dill, & cilantro.
Farm Tasks for the Week
Began bug wars in serious this week. Some small black fuzzy caterpillars went to town on the back rudbeckia patch. Manually removed into a bucket and gave the chicken a high protein breakfast. Surprisingly, the rudbeckias up front don’t appear to have any. A white gross caterpillar has begun in on the snapdragon flowers, no game plan on dealing with him yet and small green caterpillars are working on the dianthus. Currently just cutting the infected parts out and feeding to the chickens but will be spraying with BT once this week’s rain wraps up.
The gladioli up front are covered in baby grasshoppers due to looking like a tall field of grass. Picked up a dirt devil hand vacuum and successfully caught a few for another chicken feast. Need to get up earlier as they don’t hop around much in the early morning.
Finished cleaning up the chamomile and blue bachelor button seeds.
Adjusting the support netting as the zinnias, sunflower, and celosia get taller.
Chickens
Clearly the chickens are enjoying the new varieties of bugs in their diet. We have eggs available. If you’d like to reserve, email/text.
