January 24, 2026

First newsletter of the year! We do not currently have any markets for this month as our winter rule is that the temperature must get above 50 F. I am a cold weather wimp!

In bloom

We have ornamental kale that has not really colored up. As that is triggered by cold temperatures, we should have some available after this week for sure! The nice part about the kale is its crazy long vase life and long harvest window. We also have pansies and violas in bloom that we are pressed for cards.

Available Starters / Seeds

Seeds: Cilantro, catnip, parsley, dill, morning glory, bells of Ireland, chamomile, bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, lime basil, blue spice basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, and marigold.

Starters: We have tomato (Sweet 100, Early Bush, Abe Lincoln, Rutgers) and peppers that will be available for purchase in March. I’ll be starting some more tomatoes in this next week including this really cool nearly purple cherry tomato that looks yum!

Farm Tasks for the Week

VICTORY - starting snapdragons from pinched tops of other baby snapdragons was a success! This enabled me to double my snapdragon plantings for this spring. Will probably try this technique again with existing plants after they bloom in spring.

Mulched all the walkways in the new planter (one task done for the spring farm tour!). No progress on the permanent fencing or plumbing as we’re waiting for a little more conducive weather.

Finished expansion of the back growing area. The fence was moved out 4 ft and the row orientation was switched. Now the walkways are luxurious, lol. Just finished laying cardboard and wood mulching (from our many dead trees) the outer perimeter and all but three inner walkways. Big shout out to Johnson Feed in Lewisville who donated their extra cardboard for our paths. We’ve found that this layering technique nearly eliminates the need to week walkways which makes the growing season that much easier.

Chickens

The chickens are still clucking. I think they sensed the storm coming. I went to the gate to call them in / lock them up for the evening, and the entire flock came running to me. It was funny because they usually go around me. We plan on getting a handful of chicks in the spring around the time of the farm tour so people can enjoy holding baby chicks (which is the best part of having chickens).
