We will have the flower cart out this Sunday starting at 10:30 am with flowers, jam, eggs, and a few tomato starters.
In bloom
We have ornamental kale, anemones, phox, and perhaps a single icelandic poppy by Sunday! Ornamental kale has a vase life of over two weeks. Anemones are striking flowers with an unfortunately short vase life of ~5-7 days. The are unique in that the flower closes every night and reopens each day. The flower also continues to noticeably grow after cutting!
Available Starters / Seeds
Seeds: Cilantro, catnip, parsley, dill, morning glory, bells of Ireland, chamomile, bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, lime basil, blue spice basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, and marigold.
Starters: We have tomato (Sweet 100, Early Bush, Abe Lincoln, Rutgers, Sweet Gardener) and peppers that will be available for purchase in March. We also have catnip, rosemary, lavender, sage, cilantro, curly parsley, red yarrow, and pink yarrow.
Farm Tasks for the Week
This is the month to prune your roses. We pruned ours to half to get ready for spring blooms.
As the roses and perennials are dormant, we began work on the permanent planters where they are located. Over the ~10 years, the soil level has dropped nearly a foot. We’ve dug out all the plants in three of the six sections targeted for this winter, added compost/dirt mix to raise the level, divided as needed, replanted everything, and mulched. Last Saturday’s rain gave everything a good drink so anticipating success.
New challenge to solve … the pups have serious jumping abilities and have decided that the upper garden is where they need to be. They are jumping over the 5 foot fence and enjoying ripping the plastic and cloth winter protection in their free time. On the bright side, they do not appear to be trampling or digging out the flowers for now.
Chickens
The chickens are in spring laying mode, so we have plenty of eggs.
