In bloom
Hot, hot, hot … these flowers are still going! Zinnias, lisianthus, snapdragons, celosia, pincushions, basil, goldenrod, and gomphrena. Dahlias are dried sticks right now, but have tiny new growth coming up again from the base, so we’ll see next month.
Available Starters / Seeds
Seeds: Cilantro, catnip, parsley, dill, morning glory, bells of Ireland, chamomile, bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, blue spice basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, and marigold.
Starters: No starters until after the August heat wave is over.
BEARDED IRIS RHIZOMES are dug and ready for sale: Pink Opal, Silver Tower, Orange Pop, Men in Black, Shannopin, Mariposa Skies, Snoqualmie, Anembo, Goldilocks, First Interstate, Dreamy & Creamy, Wichita Falls, Stardust Memories, and Victoria Falls.
Farm Tasks for the Week
Dahlias are dried sticks right now. However, when I went to dig them up for storage, they had some tiny new growth coming up from the tubers (roots). Cut back the dried stalks and praying that they’ll have another flush later this year.
Finished all the iris trimming and bed cleanup, yay! It was a hot dusty job as usual this time of year. Putting off digging up, amending, and re-hardscaping the lower driveway iris bed until next month when it is hopefully a little more hospitable.
Started the first round of spring seeding indoors with bluebonnets, lisianthus, snapdragons, foxglove, chamomile, dianthus, and feverfew.
Chickens
Egg production is practically at a stand-still with the heat. Chickens are enjoying their water bowls in which they love to stand to cool off. They are more or less staying in the shade. They do like to give me a start every once in a while, as they look dead taking a dirt bath in the sun.
