In bloom

Carnations have joined their fellow flowers in calling it a day for the seasons with the purple coneflowers, statice, and dara not far behind. The usual hot summer flowers are still going: celosia, zinnia, gomphrena, basil, and rudbeckia. Snapdragons, yarrow, marigold, and lisianthus are also in bloom. We had a random clematis bloom along with a handful of roses too this week.

Farm Tasks for the Week

Water, water, water … and shade!

Starts have been looking great but then … something chopped off all the heads of our young ~8” sunflowers. So disappointing! We suspect sugar ants as they do love to eat the sunflowers.

Began indoor seed starters for our fall planting: snapdragons, lisianthus, dianthus, carnation, foxglove, bluebonnets, and delphenium. Always exciting to begin planning and dreaming of next year’s blooms.

Chickens

Chickens are surprisingly still laying even in the heat. We typically don’t name the chickens due to their usual untimely demise from various predators in the area. However, I’ve decided to name the pictured hen, Death Wish. She escapes the chicken run every day running the risk of the pups finding her. So far, she’s survived two encounters.

No copper heads this week! … but rat snake on the driveway mid-day chillin!
