<image:caption>This is the last week for anemones and ranunculus as we have begun digging out the corms for storage :(. Happily, we have begun harvesting the peonies! Last year the peonies were a bust as they budded early and were hit by a late freeze. This year, they timed it perfectly. Other new additions this week include roses, foxglove, and clematis. Sweet peas, snapdragons, statice, bluebonnets, and Dutch iris are going strong while the Icelandic Poppy, dianthus, and phlox are also making a showing. Available Starters / Seeds Seeds: Cilantro, catnip, parsley, dill, morning glory, bells of Ireland, chamomile, bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, lime basil, blue spice basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, and marigold. <image:caption>Continuing spring cleanup with more oak leaf and acorn removal. Began mulching all the permanent planters. The property is starting to look ready for visitors! Planted out the tray of sunflowers and basil into the various prepped beds. The celosia is still too tiny to transplant but they’ve all sprouted. Started zinnias, lime basil, and gomphrena in trays. Dug out about half the ranunculus corms and am drying them out for storage. Digging out is limited by number of drying racks, but the hot weather definitely has been speeding it up. Began adding compost and fertilizer to the former ranunculus beds but waiting until after this Saturday’s anticipated rain to plant the dahlia tubers. Chickens Transplanted a mulberry bush into the chicken corner of the yard. They decided it was a leaf buffet and ate all the leaves at their height and below. I expected them to do that so wasn’t too annoyed. Then they decided that the newly packed dirt around the base of the plant was perfect for dirt baths thereby exposing all the roots. Needless to say, a cage was added to protect the plant until it is established. We have plenty of eggs, so still at spring egg pricing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Continuing spring cleanup with more oak leaf and acorn removal. Did not get around to mulching yet, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on the leaf cleanup. Planted a couple of trays of new snapdragons. This is a late planting as we typically get these in ground in October, so we’ll see how they fair. Received and planted the lily bulbs for the big production trial. Started a few trays of sunflowers and celosia to be planted in the ranunculus beds within the next week or two. The peonies are looking great this year. We have a lot of large buds forming so should be a good harvest! Chickens No news is good news for chickens, lol. <image:caption>Jumping pup update … did not corral them last Sunday for an hour or two only to find two of them in the top planter. The girl dog got herself tangled in the support netting. Luckily, I heard her cries from inside and was able to free her before she was strangled by the netting. Unfortunately, she destroyed about a third of the snapdragon crop for the season. Continuing to work on oak leaf removal and now baby oak tree removal. It was a heavy acorn year, so our beds have sprouted a ton of baby oaks. Fertilized the iris beds that have been dug out of the fall leaves along with the peonies which have begun to emerge from the ground. Praying hard that we won’t get the anticipated freeze Monday morning as we’ve already stored all the winterization gear. Chickens Chickens are doing well. They love to go out in the morning, and they run to come back in at night (spurred on by scratch mixed with red pepper flakes). <image:caption>We have tons of anemones and ranunculus this week along with a small sampling of ornamental kale, phlox, and Icelandic Poppy. Ranunculus or Persian buttercup is an early spring favorite with a slightly longer vase life than anemones at 7-10 days using flower food. We cut ours at the “marshmallow” stage while still in a relatively tight bud. However, the flowers open bigger and bigger everyday. <image:caption>Ran out of steam on the permanent planters due to February allergies. The plants in the three completed sections took the transplant well and have lots of new growth. Will have to do the other three next winter as dormancy is over. This spring is about two weeks earlier than last year, so our winter “break” is truncated. Jumping pup challenge … found out they are using the wind break lattice for their jumping point which gives them a nice solid board to spring off. Will be rethinking how that part of the fence is constructed. Extended 30-day forecast does not anticipate freezing, so we’ve officially entered spring clean-up. Been removing and mulching all the oak leaves in the iris beds and throughout the yard (to prevent blow back). Finished the front fence line and upper iris bed. Folded and stored all our low tunnels and most of their supports. Pulled all the frost cloth which is now in a giant pile to be folded on a less windy day. Chickens The chickens are still laying regularly. We have plenty of eggs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is the month to prune your roses. We pruned ours to half to get ready for spring blooms. As the roses and perennials are dormant, we began work on the permanent planters where they are located. Over the ~10 years, the soil level has dropped nearly a foot. We’ve dug out all the plants in three of the six sections targeted for this winter, added compost/dirt mix to raise the level, divided as needed, replanted everything, and mulched. Last Saturday’s rain gave everything a good drink so anticipating success. New challenge to solve … the pups have serious jumping abilities and have decided that the upper garden is where they need to be. They are jumping over the 5 foot fence and enjoying ripping the plastic and cloth winter protection in their free time. On the bright side, they do not appear to be trampling or digging out the flowers for now. Chickens The chickens are in spring laying mode, so we have plenty of eggs.</image:caption>

The nice part about the kale is its crazy long vase life and long harvest window. We also have pansies and violas in bloom that we are pressed for cards. Available Starters / Seeds Seeds: Cilantro, catnip, parsley, dill, morning glory, bells of Ireland, chamomile, bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, lime basil, blue spice basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, and marigold. Starters: We have tomato (Sweet 100, Early Bush, Abe Lincoln, Rutgers) and peppers that will be available for purchase in March. I’ll be starting some more tomatoes in this next week including this really cool nearly purple cherry tomato that looks yum!</image:caption>

<image:caption>VICTORY - starting snapdragons from pinched tops of other baby snapdragons was a success! This enabled me to double my snapdragon plantings for this spring. Will probably try this technique again with existing plants after they bloom in spring. Mulched all the walkways in the new planter (one task done for the spring farm tour!). No progress on the permanent fencing or plumbing as we’re waiting for a little more conducive weather. Finished expansion of the back growing area. The fence was moved out 4 ft and the row orientation was switched. Now the walkways are luxurious, lol. Just finished laying cardboard and wood mulching (from our many dead trees) the outer perimeter and all but three inner walkways. Big shout out to Johnson Feed in Lewisville who donated their extra cardboard for our paths. We’ve found that this layering technique nearly eliminates the need to week walkways which makes the growing season that much easier. Chickens The chickens are still clucking. I think they sensed the storm coming. I went to the gate to call them in / lock them up for the evening, and the entire flock came running to me. It was funny because they usually go around me. We plan on getting a handful of chicks in the spring around the time of the farm tour so people can enjoy holding baby chicks (which is the best part of having chickens).</image:caption>

<image:caption>All the bearded iris rhizomes are back in the ground. Pre-sprouted anemones and ranunculus that had been dug out in April/May. Soaked the dried corms in water for 4 hours, then covered them with potting soil in trays. After setting them in a dark cool room for two weeks, they sprouted! Transplanted the erygnium, shasta daisies, and yarrow from the upper planters. Decided it was time to divide and try and find a sunnier spot for them. Now that the weather has cooled and rain is theoretically on the way, we’ve begun the big fall planting of the pre-sprouted ranunculus and anemone corms along with starter plants sprouted over the last two months: bluebonnets, foxglove, delphinium, lisianthus, statice, pincushions, carnation, and dianthus. Still waiting to declare victory or defeat on rooting the pinched tops of snapdragons. Not sure which way it’s going to go yet. Indoor seeding from a couple of weeks ago went well with most germinating. Waiting for them to get a little bigger before transplanting outside. Completed the new planter! Had to add temporary fencing as our Tasmanian devils enjoy fighting in the soft loamy new beds. Luckily, we figured this out before we planted! Plumbing is still in the works but sprinkler head on a hose works fine for now. We’ve begun the expansion of the back growing area. Took most the day to pull out the t-posts even with the post puller. Chickens We have eggs available this week, but the quantity is starting to dwindle with the shorter days.</image:caption>

We have four of the six need beds laid out and mixed up with compost, peat moss, pine bark mulch, and dirt. Two more to go along with plumbing. Decided to redo the wildflower field. Making seven furrows for further bearded iris / wildflower production. The plan is to separate the various varieties of iris with small patches of wildflowers in each row. You can still direct seed your wildflowers (bluebonnets, bee balm, etc) if you haven’t gotten around to it yet, but the window is closing fast. Chickens The guinea hen kept tempting fate and is no longer with us. She flew out of the coop several times (because the grass is greener). The dogs caught her and the third time she didn’t make it. We also lost Cross-beak this week, but thankfully not to the dogs or predators. We’re assuming it was due to old age. <image:caption>Transplanted out last month’s snapdragon starters. Once they have more than three sets of true leaves, they will be tip pruned. I’m going to attempt replanting the tips to see if they will root too (always experimenting). Also transplanted last fall planted snapdragons from the back flower plot to an upper square to prep for re-arranging of the back flower plot. Transplanted some of the seedlings from last week (chamomile, statics, pincushion) into larger cells to give me more time before they will need to transplant. The carnations, dianthus, bluebonnets, ornamental kale, first round of foxglove, and delphinium are still waiting to be transplanted. Got the first two of the six new beds laid out in the new bed. Plenty of dirt work left and plumbing, but on hold until we dry out a little for this week’s rain. <image:caption>Seelings from last week have sprouted for the most part (chamomile, catnip, statice, pincushion, and phlox). The snapdragons, carnations, dianthus, bluebonnets, ornamental kale, first round of foxglove, and delphinium (only two made it so far, lol … haven’t cracked the code on them) are ready to go in the ground. Waiting for the temperature to stay below 90 F. Work continues on the new beds. Started fill in top soil on half the new bed while digging like crazy to locate the leak. Luckily it’s only when a specific circuit of the water system is turned on so it’s not a constant problem. Going to try capping off the drip hoses to determine if it’s the hoses themselves or a leak at the center of the earth. Chickens Chicken have gotten over whatever their issue was last week and are returning nicely to their coop in the evenings. We have eggs available this week. <image:caption>Started more seedlings for fall planting (chamomile, catnip, statice, pincushion, and phlox). Put the viola seeds into the fridge to give them their needed cold stratification before planting. Still working on the new beds. Finished moving in fill dirt this week. Before we get much further there is a leak that has to be found in the existing sprinkler system. Two steps forward … well you know the rest. Chickens This week the rooster has decided he’d rather hang out in the bush then come into the coop in the evening at roll call. I think one of the girls is picking on him again as I found one of his pretty iridescent tail feathers in the coop. Always drama with these guys. We have eggs available this week. Potted up the first round of indoor starters into bigger pots. It’s still a little too warm/dry for them to get planted (plus the beds aren’t ready, lol). Chickens The guinea hen has decided to join the chicken, aka “Death Wish”, in escaping the coop. The dogs caught her, but it was luckily only psychological damage. <image:caption>Watering continues along with shade cloth for babies. Prepped the garden space and transplanted out the ornamental kale for this winter. Really loved these last year, so hoping it goes well again. They are under a shade cloth and planted close (~4” spacing) to keep the heads small. Dug out a very clay veggie garden square. Remove six inches of clay and then dug down another six inches and tilled it up. Added back six inches of compost, pine bark mulch, peat moss, and manure and tilled it all up again. Planted out some cucumbers, green beans, zucchini, and squash. The dianthus, carnation, bluebonnets, and a snapdragon or two have sprouted for the indoor seeds. Still crossing my fingers on the rest. Next week begins the fall bearded iris division! Chickens Chickens are slowing down, but we do have eggs available this week. <image:caption>Water, water, water … and shade! Starts have been looking great but then … something chopped off all the heads of our young ~8” sunflowers. So disappointing! We suspect sugar ants as they do love to eat the sunflowers. Began indoor seed starters for our fall planting: snapdragons, lisianthus, dianthus, carnation, foxglove, bluebonnets, and delphenium. Always exciting to begin planning and dreaming of next year’s blooms. Chickens Chickens are surprisingly still laying even in the heat. We typically don’t name the chickens due to their usual untimely demise from various predators in the area. However, I’ve decided to name the pictured hen, Death Wish. She escapes the chicken run every day running the risk of the pups finding her. So far, she’s survived two encounters. <image:caption>Switched over one of the gladiolus beds and another one formerly of bells of Ireland. Gladiolus bulbs are drying out indoors for storage. Tilled in compost and fertilizer and planted sunflower, marigold, cosmos, and celosia starters. Added leaf mulch and shade cloth to help the transplants get a good start in this 100 F weather. Beds were given a quick weed to tidy up. Most time is being spent hand watering. Hardy annual seeds have been ordered and are in hand for indoor seed starting in August. Chickens Chickens are still laying regularly. They’re beating the heat like usual by taking their foot baths in the watering trays. Found another baby copper head this time in the corner of the coop. That makes three this year, yikes!</image:caption>

Cut back the daisies, rudbeckia, and yarrow for fall bloom. Cut back the fruited blackberry canes to the ground and tip pruned the new canes to encourage bushier growth. Pulled out the zucchini and one of the cucumber plants that the bugs infested (lost the war on those guys, but I did get a handful of veggies first). The chickens loved the bug feast. <image:caption>Bug wars … seems like the caterpillars and perhaps the grasshoppers are under control for now. The lace bugs are in full force and the ants are getting more aggressive with their aphid farms. Still squishing lots of bugs. Wish I could get that guinea hen to go eat them up. Planted more sunflowers and scoured the edges of the yard for more leaves to mulch the few bald planters with. We’re in the watering part of the year. Bought a simple moisture probe to see how effective our watering is. Surprised at how a single bed goes from perfect to dry depending on where the probe is inserted. Hoping the new mulch layer helps even that out. Chickens Another chicken picture photo bombed by the guinea hen. Chickens have slowed down production a little due to the hot weather. <image:caption>Bug wars continue. This week it’s been mostly the sunflowers with green caterpillars, lace bugs, grasshoppers, ants (starting to farm aphids), and leafhoppers. A lot of manual bug squishing going on, lol! Planting more zinnias, celosia, basil, and sunflowers for late summer / fall crops. Weeded the two main crop areas. The beds weren’t too bad. Most the time / effort was spent along the fence line where bermuda is trying to creep in in the top growing area and where birds have planted baby elms in the back growing area. Available Starters / Seeds Seeds: Chamomile (NEW!), bluebonnets (manually scarified), bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, lime basil, blue spice basil, Persian basil, Thai basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, tassel flower, and marigold. <image:caption>Began bug wars in serious this week. Some small black fuzzy caterpillars went to town on the back rudbeckia patch. Manually removed into a bucket and gave the chicken a high protein breakfast. Surprisingly, the rudbeckias up front don’t appear to have any. A white gross caterpillar has begun in on the snapdragon flowers, no game plan on dealing with him yet and small green caterpillars are working on the dianthus. Currently just cutting the infected parts out and feeding to the chickens but will be spraying with BT once this week’s rain wraps up. The gladioli up front are covered in baby grasshoppers due to looking like a tall field of grass. Picked up a dirt devil hand vacuum and successfully caught a few for another chicken feast. Need to get up earlier as they don’t hop around much in the early morning. Finished cleaning up the chamomile and blue bachelor button seeds. Adjusting the support netting as the zinnias, sunflower, and celosia get taller. Chickens Clearly the chickens are enjoying the new varieties of bugs in their diet. We have eggs available. If you’d like to reserve, email/text.</image:caption>

Been collecting bachelor button seeds, but waiting until done collecting for the final clean-up. Roughed up a small section along the outside front fence line and seeded zinnias. We lost a large oak up there this past year, so hoping they’ll take with the added sunshine. It’s time to feed the roses (every 6 weeks during blooming season). Chickens Chickens are doing well. <image:caption>Cleaned up the dutch iris by cutting them to the ground. Also removed the bread poppies and bluebonnets which were spent for the season. Weeded the front flower beds and paths which were not too bad thanks to the cardboard / wood chips in the paths and thick mulched leaves in the beds. Thick mulched leaves in the beds have the downside of promoting pill bugs which eat seedlings. Sluggo is a great control for the pill bugs! Harvested nearly all the bells of Ireland due to them being weighed down by the rain. Transplanted sunflower and zinnia starters. Chickens Having a buggy spring with spiders and chiggers, so let the chickens roam the yard. They immediately went and started eating up the nearly ripe blackberries! We have eggs available. <image:caption>Looks like it is soon to be a buggy year! We have tons of grasshopper nymphs jumping about, so bought a nest of praying mantis. We’ll see how it turns out. We’ve also put several bird feeders around the playing areas. Fire ants have been a large problem setting up shop in nearly all the beds. Although the bites are no fun, the bigger problem is that they love to chomp on our sunflower babies. Will be spreading dried molasses as I’ve been told they will pack up and move as they do not like sugar. Seems counter intuitive but giving it a go. Transplanted the gomphrena starters into their sections and finished planting the crocosmia (super late on them!). <image:caption>Fertilized the hydrangea for the last time of the season. We delayed it a week as it was too rainy the first week of May which would have washed away the fertilizer. Dug out the anemones for storage. We left the anemones in place last year and lost a few. That coupled with the dense spacing led to experimenting with digging them out. It turned out to be the right decision as that roughly half of the corms either disappeared or were in a serious state of rot. The other half are safely drying for storage until the fall. Continued to flip the early spring crop beds to zinnias, sunflowers, and celosia. The gomphrena “babies” are still a little small to transplant but they are growing quickly. <image:caption>Finally put the supports and support netting out. Put it off a little too long so it was a bit of a challenge to get around the bells of Ireland, but it’s done! Added support stakes to Eryngium. Very happy to be on top of this as this will be the first year that I got it done before they flopped over. Transplanted the sunflowers and zinnias into the former ranunculus beds and started some balsam indoors for the shadier ranunculus bed (not too shady in early spring, but now that the trees have leafed out it is). Chickens We have a plethora of eggs. Join the email list to get a special discount this week on eggs!</image:caption>

<image:caption>We have had a bumper crop of chamomile this year. The chamomile unfortunately fell over in the heavy rains last week and then started growing crookedly upwards making it unusable for bouquets. Decided to try using the flowers for a jelly, and it turned out scrumptious. We’ve also had more violas than I can keep up with pressing for pressed flower cards so decided to make them into a jelly too. This jelly is very interesting. The juice is a beautiful turquoise blue that turns a pretty pink upon addition of the lemon. The taste is flowery almost like berries unlike the raw flowers. We have very limited quantity of the Viola Jelly, so call/text to reserve a jar if you don’t want to try your luck. We have the following jams available: Usual Flavors: Seasonal Flavors: Strawberry Jam - Strawberry Lemonade Strawberry Blueberry Jam - Chamomile Jelly Strawberry Peach Jam - Viola Jelly Strawberry Jalapeño Jam Blueberry Peach Jam Blueberry Lime Jam Blueberry Jam Blueberry Jalapeño Jam Apple Butter Mango Raspberry Jam Raspberry Jam Cherry Jam</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dug out the ranunculus corms. Cleaned off the corms and leaving them on trays indoors to dry out for storage until they get replanted in October. There is some debate as to whether they can be left in place over the summer. We prefer to dig them up instead of taking the risk of them rotting. Planted the first round of sunflowers and have zinnias and celosia starting indoors until the ranunculus dig out is complete. Continuing to tag bearded iris rhizomes as they bloom for fall division. <image:caption>Ranunculus and anemones are still in bloom by the bucket this week. The fruit trees are pretty much done after all the crazy wind! We have the first handful of bluebonnets, Dutch iris, and snow drops to mix things up. Delphinium and Icelandic poppies will likely join the party next week (although there aren’t many of either, as I had difficultly starting them from seeds). Available Starters / Seeds Seeds: Bachelor’s button, love-in-a-mist (nigella), forget-me-nots, cosmos, dara (colored queen Anne’s lace), Mexican sunflowers, gomphrena, bee balm, celosia, cock’s comb, lime basil, blue spice basil, Persian basil, Thai basil, purple hyacinth bean, hardy hibiscus, bupleurum, tassel flower, and marigold. Starters: We have tomatoes (Sweet 100, Better Boy, and Bush), broccoli, cauliflower, tarragon, yarrow, apple mint, queen Anne’s lace, larkspur, oregano, catnip, green beans, marjoram, curly parsley, orange thyme, and mint starters ready for purchase. The jalapenos peppers, rosemary, lavender, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, and basil still need a few more weeks before they’ll be ready.</image:caption>

<image:caption>…. Still cleaning up beds. Realistically this will likely take a few more weeks especially with the wind. Removing and mulching tons and tons of leaves from all the planters and then mulching the planters with the cut-up leaf mulch. Put away all winterization equipment (frost cloths, wire supports, weights, and plastic covers). Began rose fertilization. This will occur every six weeks until late fall to keep the roses happy, healthy, and blooming :) First hydrangea fertilization of the season. Next application of fertilizer will be roughly the 3rd week of April and final one the 1st week of May. Trimmed liriope an inch or so to the ground to clear out old growth before the new sprouts. Everything was covered up late Wednesday for last night’s freeze, so hoping for the best! Will be harvesting the last of the fall ornamental kale for this weekend’s market. Starters: Nothing available at this time. However, the tomato (Sweet 100, Better Boy, and Bush), broccoli, cauliflower, and peppers seedlings have sprouted along with the rosemary, oregano, tarragon, marjoram, curly parsley, lavender, and orange thyme.
